Saturation of nuclear matter and radii of unstable nuclei
26 p (12 Apr 2002)12 Apr 2002
We examine relations among the parameters characterizing the phenomenological equation of state (EOS) of nearly symmetric, uniform nuclear matter near the saturation density by comparing macroscopic calculations of radii and massesof stable nuclei with the experimental data. The EOS parameters of interest here are the symmetry energy S_0, the symmetry energy density-derivative coefficient L and the incompressibility K_0 at the normal nuclear density. [...]

Hybrid Baryons
[LA-UR-02-2040]
Los Alamos, NM : Los Alamos Sci. Lab. 12 p (11 Apr 2002)11 Apr 2002
We review the status of hybrid baryons. The only known way to study hybrids rigorously is via excited adiabatic potentials. [...]

Fine Structure Constant Variation from a Late Phase Transition
Berkeley, CA : Lawrence Berkeley Nat. Lab. 9 p (12 Apr 2002)12 Apr 2002
Recent experimental data indicates that the fine structure constant alpha may be varying on cosmological time scales. We consider the possibility that such a variation could be induced by a second order phase transition which occursat late times (z ~ 1 - 3) and involves a change in the vacuum expectation value (vev) of a scalar with milli-eV mass. [...]

Modular Invariant Anomalous U(1) Breaking
[LBNL-50097; UCB-PTH-02-14]
Berkeley, CA : Lawrence Berkeley Nat. Lab. 19 p (11 Apr 2002)11 Apr 2002
We describe the effective supergravity theory present below the scale of spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking due to an anomalous U(1), obtained by integrating out tree-level interactions of massive modes. A simple case is examined insome detail. [...]
